A Wonderful Weekend in Pennsylvania (with my foot!)

Last weekend I went for  a long weekend trip with my sister…we went to:

The Barnes Foundation, which turned out to be one of the most interesting museums I have ever visited. It encourages you to look at the paintings in a whole different way and find relationships between the paintings, furniture, and pieces of ironwork that are mounted between the paintings. Not to mention the extensive collection of Renoirs that you can’t see anywhere else. It is closing in a month to be moved to another location, so see it in its original location while you can! Right now, it is in the original building, surrounded by gardens, with the painting arranged as Barnes intended. After an extensive lawsuit, it is going to be moved to a space in Philadelphia. Here’s one opinion on the move

Longwood Gardens, an estate originally belonging to the Duponts. It has beautiful gardens. Many of the plants are grown in the greenhouses and put out when they are in bloom, so there are constantly changing displays. On the other hand, you know that many of those lovely plants are going to be pulled out when their usefulness is over…

Winterthur, another Dupont estate. This one is an in-ground park. What you see stays in the ground all year long. It is more wooded and hilly, and was my favorite of the two gardens.

The Brandywine River Museum, with its collection of paintings by three generations of Wyeths. It also has a nice nature trail that goes under the highway and along a boardwalk through a wetland. It comes out at the Chadds Ford Historical Society, so you can walk from one to the other. It also has a wildflower garden.

I will try to flesh this out later, but meanwhile, what does it have to do with a Lisfranc injury? I walked and walked and walked for four days, uphill and down, and the foot hardly hurt at all! It was a bit stiffer than usual in the mornings, but that was it. A year ago I couldn’t have done it, so I am pleased with my progress…
